- Food Production
- Reuse & Recycle
Greener Growth has been working with Little Plumstead Church of England school for over three years, designing gardens for growing food, establishing an orchard, additional bio-diversity enhancement & wildlife protection areas for the children to learn about nature and planting vegetables.
The school wants to bring nature into the classroom and children into the outdoors and we want to help them achieve that with one of the main points of permaculture – turning an under-used area into a brilliant resource. Reuse, recycle, refresh!
The school had an issue where play equipment had been removed and there were holes left in its place. But, with the help of Greener Growth, this ‘problem area’ is now a productive one as we’ve designed and placed raised beds to cover the holes. The children are now growing an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables in these beds, which will be high enough for easy reach and disabled access, and out of reach of those prolific rabbits!
Garden One, with these raised beds, flows via a green willow lined walkway to Garden Two, where additional raised beds were erected for the tiny tots. The children have been involved in creating the green willow features and helped weave the green fencing, which is established all the way around both gardens. This fence helps protect the area, creating a thing of beauty and helping boost bio-diversity.
Greener Growth has been looking for funding to further consolidate this design and development. The Board of Governors and Friends of the School have since agreed to do so, but there is still much more to be gained.
During the next Phase we plan to help the school by creating swathes of wild flower meadow areas on some step sloping areas in the grounds and erecting a poly-tunnel to help create all year round food growing and an additional “all weather” growing space.
Thank you governors and friends of Little Plumstead Church Of England School!
