HMP Swaleside is our first prison project outside the region, based on the Isle Of Sheppey in Kent. It’s also our first category B prison so additional security & health & safety training will be given to everyone delivering our project on this site, which will be provided by the prison. We will then carry not only keys, but also radio sets to give us extra security when working on the unit.
The project here involves restoring and adding to a large internal garden, about an acre in size, in the centre of the prison complex itself. Due to building works and service changes, the garden has been little used for some time and the substantial green-house unused for a few years.
We have started the development phase, working with the PIPE unit staff & getting to know what they are looking for and what their priorities are. We have spent some time on the grounds themselves, mapping out the space & deciding how best to use what there is on site already. Using those permaculture design principles from the start! We’ll be putting in rainwater harvesting, wildlife ponds, a small orchard, a pumpkin patch and we have cleared out the greenhouse and brought it back to life. It is currently full of hundreds of seedlings in readiness for the next stage. It’s a very exciting next stage to Greener Growth’s growing!
See how you can help this and our other projects here.
