Cecil Gowing School has some lovely green areas, but as we often find, they had been a little neglected due to lack of staff availability and a good plan of action that incorportated an over-view of the school’s needs. Once we had given them the Greener Growth overview – incorporating a five-year proposal – we got to work with phase one! We used the small initial budget the school had to improve the impression and privacy of the front of the school by planting our live willow “Fedge” fencing with immediate effect.
At the back of the school three school grounds converge: the Sprowston Community College, Falcon Junior & Cecil Gowing. The wind howled across the sports field and a wind break was needed to enable these little children to use their playground without getting so buffeted by the wind in the Winter. Another live willow Fedge was planted, with the children’s help, to great effect from the start.
Sadly the school had lost a much loved Dinner Lady Jasmine and phase two of the plan was to create a Memorial Garden in her honour. We set about helping the school transform an unused and rather unloved rectangular grass garden into a haven for children & wildlife! We put in a sequence of seven raised beds with integral benches, overarched by green willow. At the end we created a pergola for Winter & Summer flowering Jasmin and having a bench at each end completed the picture and helped create an outdoor teaching area. Little Wildlife havens were added and a water feature popped in by the school as the crowning glory.
For this wonderful little schools 50th anniversary we’ll be creating a new garden as phase three. We’ll start building the infrastructure for this lovely new garden, already planned and ready to go. We want to make sure the gardens are established and ready to enjoy for the BIG celebration the school will be having.
